Inflation has risen in Saxony: This has become more expensive and that has become cheaper

Consumer prices in Saxony are once again above the three percent mark. Some of this can be explained by the vacation season.

Kamenz. The inflation rate in Saxony is back above the three percent mark. According to provisional figures, the annual inflation rate in July was 3.1 percent, as announced by the State Statistical Office on Tuesday. In June, the figure had fallen to 2.8 percent, in May it had also been 3.1 percent.

Compared to June, consumer prices rose by 0.6 percent in July. Typical for the vacation season, air fares (up 18.3 percent) and prices for package tours (up 10.1 percent) in particular rose, according to the statistics office.

Car insurance more expensive, school bags cheaper

Over the course of the year, prices for services also increased (4.3%; excluding net rental development, by as much as 5.0%), more than twice as much as for goods (1.9%). In addition to the overall increase in prices in restaurants, hotels and guesthouses (5.9%), this was mainly due to developments in insurance services for private transportation (30.8%) and social services (9.2%).

Parents of school-age children paid particular attention to the prices of school supplies in the month before the start of the new school year. This showed that the purchase of pencils, colored pencils or coloring boxes (12.2 percent) as well as exercise books, coloring and drawing pads (8.6 percent), for example, were more expensive compared to last year. In contrast, a new school bag or backpack (-3.2%) cost slightly less compared to July 2023. Prices for fuel remained constant on a monthly average compared to the previous month, while they fell for clothing and shoes (-4.5%).
