With the Stein-Reich adventure world near the Bastei, the Hohnstein district of Rathewalde had one of the biggest attractions of its kind in Saxon Switzerland. Small, crooked and colorful wooden houses, sandstone colossi, legendary figures and a beautiful excursion restaurant characterize the area. It was particularly popular with families with children. Since the closure in 2020 during the coronavirus pandemic, the site has lain fallow.
There is clearly still no threat of external decay, but the ravages of time are gnawing away at the wood in particular. In Rathewalde, people are discussing and speculating about what the future of the site could look like. And the residents would like to see the adventure park used as such again. "Perhaps with a new concept that is not just geared towards children, but includes all age groups," says village head Uwe Nescheida.
And there are also ideas in the village on how to make the site more attractive from the outside, for example. In the opinion of the Rathewald residents, the large, heavy wooden fence facing the road should no longer be designed in such a way that it is impossible to see in. "The area should arouse curiosity as soon as you drive past," says the head of the village.
With new ideas, the purchase negotiations might actually gain momentum again. After all, at 295,000 euros, the amusement park is almost at a bargain price. That wasn't always the case.
In spring 2023, a real estate agent took over the marketing. The adventure world was initially offered for 820,000 euros. In May 2023, the purchase price was then only 520,000 euros. The estate agent had since given up the sale. The owners, siblings Karen and Stephan Trepte, had decided to have their adventure world auctioned off at the Saxon Property Auction in Dresden at the end of 2023. The auction started at 295,000 euros. But no buyer was found.
In the meantime, the site is still listed in the real estate ads on classifieds, previously Ebay classifieds. The owners hope that a buyer will still be found in this way. And this buyer could even reopen the leisure park very close to the Bastei.
For a long time, it was a popular excursion destination, especially for families. In good years, up to 30,000 visitors came. According to the siblings, they invested around one million euros in the adventure world and fulfilled a big dream when it opened in 2014. Both have since changed careers.
