Dresden. The Saxon Crafts Day has a new president: Uwe Nostitz. The 62-year-old building contractor from Großpostwitz near Bautzen was elected to the highest honorary office of the economic sector in the Free State with 70 out of 104 votes in Dresden on Wednesday. He succeeds Jörg Dittrich, who moves to the second tier as Vice President. Dittrich, President of the German Confederation of Skilled Crafts (ZDH) since 2023, no longer stood for the top position in Saxony.

As the regional umbrella organization of the chambers and associations, the Handwerkstag represents the interests of around 55,000 companies with around 290,000 employees. Civil engineer Nostitz also serves as president of Saxony's construction industry association and as vice president of the federal association ZDB. In this role, he is the chief negotiator for the employers in the current wage dispute. They had rejected the arbitrator's decision and are being selectively supported by the IG BAU on strike - as was the case in Chemnitz on Wednesday. (SZ/mr)
