Dresden. The Elbe Aircraft Works GmbH (EFW) have received a lucrative order from Lufthansa. The company announced in Dresden on Wednesday that Germany's largest airline will have new overhead bins installed in 38 Airbus A320 aircraft from 2025.

The new compartments, called L-Bins, create 60 percent more storage space compared to the previously used in-cab systems, it said. Installation per machine takes three to five days. "Minimal changes" are required to the cab, it said. EFW developed the new compartments together with the Airbus design team.

Airbus manager Charbel Youzkatli said larger bins are "absolutely necessary to improve the passenger experience." Lufthansa is the first company to offer its passengers the L-bins, he said. In the future, this could also speed up the handling of aircraft before takeoff, he said. EFW CEO Jordi Boto sees the order as proof "that we have all the capabilities to support customers with cabin interior systems."

EFW is one of Saxony's largest industrial companies, headquartered in Dresden. It employs more than 2,000 people at nine sites, including Kodersdorf in eastern Saxony, and is, according to its own statements, "on a strong growth course". In the most recently published financial statements for the Corona year 2021, sales are stated at a good 244 million euros. This included an after-tax loss of 38.2 million euros. For 2022, however, it had already been announced that "earnings before taxes are expected to rise sharply.
