The Sachse bakery in Dohna has been closed since July 22. Announced on the previous Friday, all branches were closed from Monday. Customers and employees were surprised and shocked. Managing Director David Haack pulled the ripcord for the second time with the insolvency. His decision was primarily in the interests of the 50 or so employees, says provisional insolvency administrator Henry Girbig from the Dresden law firm Tiefenbacher.

The bakery already had economic problems last year. Insolvency under self-administration enabled the business to continue operating. At the same time, the employees received insolvency benefits during the most critical period. However, the insolvency proceedings had not yet been completed, but the time for the insolvency money had been used up. As a result, the employees would have received neither wages nor insolvency money if Haack had continued, says Girbig. He therefore describes Haack's decision as fair.

Old machinery, difficult size

The reasons for the insolvency are on the one hand the usual ones, but on the other hand there are special ones. The usual ones are the price and wage increases and the reluctance to buy, says Girbig. The special ones lie in the history of the bakery. Haack had taken over an old machine park and more and more was breaking down. The bakery was founded in 1977 by Manfred Sachse. He passed the business on to his daughter Annegret Helm in 2011. Haack took over on January 1, 2020 at the age of 33.

In addition, the company has a difficult size with seven stores. Too small and too big at the same time. The trend is towards fewer and fewer bakeries with more and more branches, confirms the Chamber of Crafts. Last year, for example, the traditional Petzold bakery in Großröhrsdorf also had to file for insolvency. Although it had 13 branches and around 70 employees, the situation is comparable, says Girbig, who also supports the Großröhrsdorf bakery. Haack did not make any mistakes.

Promising prospects for four branches

However, he praises the Dohna bakery boss Haack: "'He had the best control over the figures." He also paid all the rents for the branches until the end. That is now helping. Negotiations are currently underway regarding the continuation of four branches. The talks are very promising, says Girbig. He will not say who the interested party is or which stores are involved. But a result could be known as early as next week. The previous seven locations of the Sachse bakery were in Dohna, Pirna, Bad Gottleuba and Berggießhübel.
